INTERNSHIP

Anoushka Saraf

Hey, my name is Anoushka! I am an economics and world politics double major at Hamilton College, and for the past 1 1/2 years I have been interning at MUCC. I have worked with MUCC on various programs such as their after school and Saturday tutoring, girls soccer coaching, and a boys basketball league.

Coming to MUCC and spending time with the children and volunteers is always the highlight of my week. The Hamilton tutors, coaches, and I love to help the kids with their homework and subject material, work on fun activities, and play educational games with them. The staff at MUCC is so warm and welcoming, always ready to help, and I have truly learnt so much during my time here.

Utica is such a culturally rich and diverse city and I am so grateful to be a small part of the amazing work that MUCC does to support the citizens of their community!

We provide support and mentorship to college students and young adults to help them develop their skills and gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. Read below for learn more about some of the wonderful work they do!

During the summer of 2023, I was grateful to have been accepted for an internship as an assistant program coordinator at the Midtown Utica Community Center. I spent the summer working with the Program Manager on planning upcoming activities for the summer youth employment program.

I enjoyed making the event sheets and flyers for their social media. I also kept a spreadsheet of the student worker's attendance and participation. Most of my time was spent interacting with the student workers. I got to see what they liked and disliked about the activities and sometimes even got to participate with them. Nurallah and I consistently communicated to see how we could improve the program each day to help the students not just build up their work ethics but have a memorable time with other students during that summer. I always enjoyed working with students.

Being a leader is always one of the important roles that I like being. And in this internship I believe being a recent high school graduate and very close in age with those student workers made them believe that they can also challenge themselves and apply for higher roles to give them great experiences and opportunities.

Citlali Lopez

Hi! My name is Citlali but I’m most commonly known by its translation: Star. I’m currently attending Utica University as a nursing major, and being a part of the tutoring program here at MUCC was in all forms enlightening and essential to my smooth transition here at Utica.

I knew the moment I saw the job description that this was the place I wanted to contribute my time and service to. I’m grateful I met the most wonderful people in all the spaces of MUCC that really make it a third place for a lot of others as well. I had the honor of being a helping hand inside and outside the offices, organizing or partaking in small tasks that made the workload seem less heavy and more practical. I also enjoyed any manual work with setting up for programs or reorganizing the spaces for cleaning or renovation. Most of all, I loved the act of being someone’s tutor for any academic or personal challenges. I was there to structurally make sure every student was included and earning something out of the classes held in after-school times. My time felt fulfilling and I was motivated to come back always brighter than before.
Becoming an intern for MUCC has been one of the best decisions I have made since I moved here, as it has taught me quite a lot about the wonderful community and of myself. I got to know the area a lot better and made friends with everyone I had the chance to work with. I believe the heart of MUCC are the people who work in and behind the scenes, doing the impactful work for the community in all ways imaginable. A lot of my work feels undone so I hope to be back as a volunteer in any of the workshops, programs, or events that may need more helping arms.

Neler Htoo

Greetings! My name is Neler and I interned at MUCC during the summer of 2023. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in social work at Stony Brook University. During my internship at MUCC, I had the opportunity to take on various roles to support the MUCC Camp program. Throughout my internship at MUCC, I have acquired valuable work experience and developed skills in assisting both children and adults from low-income families. Furthermore, I gained firsthand insight into the operational dynamics of non-profit organizations and the paramount significance of establishing a safe environment for the community.

At MUCC, I worked together with professionals from various backgrounds and volunteers to plan and coordinate the MUCC Camp. I also had the wonderful chance to take on the position of camp counselor. I had the opportunity to work with the children and I am deeply grateful that MUCC created extraordinary experiences for them.

Having been raised in Utica, I have consistently used MUCC resources and eagerly anticipate the prospects that lie ahead for MUCC. Working with the entire staff has been a delightful experience, and I thank you again for this opportunity.
